The Afya Zetu Initiative, at its core, hopes to address the challenges associated with Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) by channeling its focus and efforts toward the communities that need help the most. Named after the Swahili words for “our health,” the Afya Zetu is premised on the belief in the power of community-based awareness to control, prevent, and eradicate the spread of these ailments.
The Initiative is committed to prioritizing awareness and encouraging community action. Plans towards this end include the creation and dissemination of informative factsheets, long-form interviews with important stakeholders, a volunteer mobilization handbook, and a white paper analyzing the best culturally sensitive forms of interventions to create maximum impact. The Initiative also intends to partner with schools, local organizations, and Kenyan hospitals across Kenya and the UK, in order to amplify the capacity of the project to undertake different organizations and create impactful resources through initiatives like fundraising, distribution drives, and volunteering programs. Significantly, the Initiative seeks to set up a mobile clinic equipped with health professionals and medical supplies to be able to administer essential medical responses and suggest preventive measures to people living in more remote areas.
As such, the Afya Zetu Initiative is dedicated to coalescing action with awareness in order to foster healthier and NTD-free communities.
